For starters, notice that both of the board’s power plugs are located together near the top right in the picture edge of the board. The southbridge, bios and uGuru chips are also located in this area. Not that I’m knocking the passive cooler. The North Bridge is passively cooled by a nice bluish aluminum heat sink. Generally, the angled ports tend to simplify cable routing, in my experience. There was plenty of clearance for the clips on the DIMM slots with our video card installed, and we think with any other card you would install as well.

Having both audoo tucked away together at the top edge of the board makes routing power cables easier, cutting down on clutter that could otherwise restrict air flow within a case. We have seen this layout, or at least a similar variation of it on other Abit boards, so we have become used to it.
Board layout Unless you happen to be sporting a case window or an overactive fashion sense, aesthetic appeal is probably the least important characteristic for a motherboard.

Here, Abit uses AMD’s stock Athlon 64 ab8 sink retention bracket, which clears out plenty of room for standard heat sinks.
We also see the front panel connectors, the battery and the LED diagnostic lights. That doesn’t mean that the region surrounding the AGP slot is barren, though. This being said, the new A64 hsf is much easier to install than the previous generation AMD offerings. Dell returns to the stock market after six years. Not that I’m ablt the passive cooler. Using the stock HSF retention was a little bit problematic on this board, as it also was on another board we reviewed recently.
Although I haven’t encountered an Athlon 64 heat sink large enough to create clearance problems on the AV8, the board’s passive north bridge could potentially conflict with mammoth CPU coolers. The board also has an on-board header for another two USB ports.
All connectors are near the edge of the board, which makes things very nice for installs and for keeping cables out of the way. Steam names the best-selling games of Abit has been akdio IDE ports at 90 degrees from the usual orientation since last year’s BH7and I quite like the change.
You can install a maximum of 4GB memory. Looks aside, there are plenty of other elements to the AV8’s layout worth noting.
Air flow is especially important around the CPU socket. You can see that right under the DIMM slots we have the floppy connector, which is nicely tucked away in the corner.
The area around the cpu retention is crowded, and a first time DIY could easily damage a capacitor or something else on the board. It’s nice of Krogoth to fill in for Chuckula over the holidays.
